This is how acupuncture can significantly improve the lives of people with more complicated mental illnesses.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>How does acupuncture work for mental illness?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Acupuncture can provide the patient with a profound experience of relaxation. For people suffering mental illness, this initially can last only a short time (1-24 hours) but over a course of treatment, it gradually lasts longer and longer.<\/p>\n<p>Emotionally, acupuncture has been reported to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce the frequency and\/or severity of panic attacks<\/li>\n<li>Increase the time of \u2018connectedness\u2019 or \u2018being back in the world\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Reduce irritability, frustration, outbursts of anger<\/li>\n<li>Reduce sadness, grief and hopelessness<\/li>\n<li>Reduce hyperactivity and enhance concentration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Physically, acupuncture treatment can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve sleep (which does so much)<\/li>\n<li>Regulate appetite, digestion and bowel motions<\/li>\n<li>Reduce urinary frequency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We work towards getting our patients back to the condition where they can implement a healthy and appropriate diet and exercise plan.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>How many treatments will I need?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Most of patients can have significant improvement in one month, but this changes from person to person. It depends on the person\u2019s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severity of mental illness<\/li>\n<li>History (and family history of mental illness)<\/li>\n<li>Personal overall health<\/li>\n<li>Personal circumstances and lifestyle<\/li>\n<li>Personal goals in treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clinically, we tend to find that people with more severe symptoms tend to have more dramatic responses. However, it can take more sessions overall for changes to settle in.<\/p>\n<p>Overall health, lifestyle and circumstances have a big impact on each person\u2019s ability to sustain changes.
